PAK-A-POO RAID
DETECTIVE CASSELLS BUSY AGAIN.
A game very popular in the Chinese quarter of tho city lately has been pak-a-poo. The police by their vigilance have endeavoured to check it, but extra precautions have been taken to prevent, detection. Last evening, however, tho players were shrewdly outmanoeuvred by Detective-Sergeant Cassells.
About half-past 6 o’clock a police, co;. table, disguised, strolled nonchalantly past the scouts in Haining street and gained admittance to No. 21. He was followed a few minutes later by another constable, also disguised. This man arrived at No. 21 at exactly the same time as the messenger conveying tho result of the drawing of the “bank.” The messenger was just in the act of pushing the result through a small hole in the door into a receptacle composed ot a cigar-box, when ha found himself suddenly collared and •pushed inside. To complete tho surprise party, Detective Cassells cycled up. PIo and Constable Connor searched the building and arrested two Chinamen, and as a result of the investigation a quantity of pak-a-poo paraphernalia was also seized. This morning tho two apprehended Celestials will appear in the Magistrate’s. Court to answer charges of offences against tho Gaming Act. Wong Ling will be charged with keeping _ a common gaming-house at No. 21, Haining street, and Ah Lum will be charged with assisting in tho management of a lottery. This is the second time tho latter lias been arrested on tho charge.
