ALLEGED DEFAMATION

A FARMER SUED. Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 9. The action brought by the Northern Wairoa Co-operative Dairy Company against William Thomas Hunt, fanner, of Ruawai, claiming £IOO for alleged defamation, was commenced at the Supreme Court this morning. The alleged defamation arose out of a statement attributed to the defendant at a meeting of farmers held at Ruawai for the purpose of considering a proposal to start a factory in opposition to plaintiff’s venture. In the course of a discussion on the matter of the operations of the Northern Wairoa Company, the defendant was alleged to have declared that the company “paid a bonus by increasing the overdraft, calling up the share capital, andi showing on the balance-sheet butter that it had not made or sold.” This allegation of malpractice, it was claimed, seriously damaged the reputation of the company.
