ALLEGED DEFAMATION
A FARMER SUED. Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 9. The action brought by the Northern Wairoa Co-operative Dairy Company against William Thomas Hunt, fanner, of Ruawai, claiming £IOO for alleged defamation, was commenced at the Supreme Court this morning. The alleged defamation arose out of a statement attributed to the defendant at a meeting of farmers held at Ruawai for the purpose of considering a proposal to start a factory in opposition to plaintiff’s venture. In the course of a discussion on the matter of the operations of the Northern Wairoa Company, the defendant was alleged to have declared that the company “paid a bonus by increasing the overdraft, calling up the share capital, andi showing on the balance-sheet butter that it had not made or sold.” This allegation of malpractice, it was claimed, seriously damaged the reputation of the company. Tho defence denied the use of the words complained of.
