Mr J. G. Stevens, of Otaki, has effected several very important, land transactiops, gelling within a week considerably D.ver ,£II,OOO worth of .property on the estate of Messrs Monckton and Adding, ton. Mr E. Macdonald, of Pahiatua. bought lots 10, 15, 18,. and 20; My Q. Spewing, also of Pahiatna, purchasing lot 1!?. while Mr C. Jensen. of the same townshin. bought sections 14. 21 and 22. Mr J. G. Harkness, iof Wellington, has bought section 24. while there is a great probability of the homestead and dairy farm of 280 acres changing hands at an early date. By the sale of the abovo sections it is probable that application will be for tbe erection of ft school at Hantere Cross. _ The death occurred at the Otaki Hospital at 2.30 this morning of Mr John Cootes. the youngest son of the late Mr .Tames Cootes, who died ton! y recently. Deceased, who was a fine, robust young fellow of 20 years of age, was a good athlete, and for some time was one of the finest players in the Tainui Football Club. Last week he was attacked with appendicitis, but, 'unfortunately, did not enter the hospital for some days. Immediately on arrival ho was operated on, but despite all skill and attention general peritonitis had set in. and very littl© hope was held out for his recovery. The Otaki. Bowling Club, are anxious to send rinks to the Palmerston North tournament at Easter time, and already Borne of the members are busy jn this connection. The local green is playing better than ever, and on Saturday some very fine games were indulged in. A nasty accident occurred to a four-teen-year-old girl named Eleanor Marino, of Te Horo. The child had been attendin'- Te Horo school picnic on Friday. and at the conclusion had a cordial bottle in her possession, when it .exploded. sending pieces of glass in various directions. One piece struck the girl near the eye. with the result that there Is a probability of the sight being'injured. _ Dr Hardwick-Smith and the Rev. WA. EVans (chairman lof the Hospital Board) were in Otaki on Saturday, and made a general inspection of . the hospital. sanatorium, etc. It is understood that they were highly pleased at everything. , , . It is not generally known that hospital fees in New Zealand have been raised to a uniform scale. Such is the case, however, but the hardship., if any, will fall on tho people best able to pay. Ino fee (£2 2e weekly) came into force on February Ist. _ . Tho matron of the Otaki Hospital is always deeply grateful to thoughtful people who “supply numerous articles, etc., for patients of the hospital and Sanatorium. Among the last to enppjy much appreciated things are Mr Pink, of Oban who generously gave a quantity of honey in the comb, and Mr JG. Stevens, who sent along a quantity ot the finest plums available. Two very pronounced shocks of cartnouake were felt hero yesterday morning, bein'- tho heaviest for a considerable number of -'ears. Beyond damage to chimneys, no other injury is reported.
