BILLIARDS
GRAY AND THE IVORIES. By TcUgraph—Press Association—Copyrlgln LONDON, February 8. Commenting on the Gray-Newmnn Milliard match (which was won by the latter) the newspaper “Observer” says that if Gray had been seen on an off, day ho might have given the impres-j 'sion that the ivories were too much 'for him. Ho often played too thinly on the object ball, but at other times proved that he will become as pro*; ficient with the ivories as with com? position halls. He showed on Friday that ho knows far more of the peculiarities of ivories than ho did the week before.
NOT DISGRACED. A LONDON OPINION, (Times— Sydney '‘Sun” Sxiocial Cables.) (Received February 9, 5.20 p.m.) LONDON, February 8. j Gray is not discredited, even regard* ing tho results of tho match as the solo criterion of his merit, for it is stated that Newman would heat any living player on tho same odds. Gray, even without improving his control of the* ivories, still has a chance of winning tho English championship in March.' He is one of the finest living players in-individual shots, and when ho gets the pace for the ivories it is odds on he will make a four-figure break in the championship match.
