BOWLING
AUSTRALIAN VISITORS Yesterday morning, at the Town' Hall, the visiting Australian bowlers were welcomed to the city by the Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke). He said that ho looked upon the visits of bowlers from one country to another as being of very great value in promoting goodfellowship and a better understanding.
Response was made on behalf of the visitors by the manager (Air S. Clarke), who agreed that interchange of visits did a lot of good. He remarked upon the warmth of welcome the team had' received everywhere since arriving in New Zealand, and thanked the Mayor for his cordial reception to Wellington.
Subsequently the visitors were taken; for a motor drive through the Hutt, Valley, in the course of which they l called upon the Hon. J. Duthie, M.L.C., at his residence at Nai Nai.
In the afternoon a seven-rink match was played on the AVellingtoa Club’s green between the Australian visiting bowlers and teams picked from the various clubs in the Wellington centre., The rinks were in splendid order and) very keen. There was a breeze blow-, ing, but it was not sufficient to inter-' fere with the bias, and play was most; enjoyable. The keenness of the green; at the commencement of the games', had its effect upon both visitors and local players, and a fair number ofi bowls found a resting-place in the ditch. It was not long, however, before the strength was mastered, and when this was acquired accurate and interesting “ heads ” were the order of; the afternoon.
Australia was first to score, and maintained a lead right out to the, eighteenth head, when the visitors' were 17 points up. Each visiting rink had an advantage by a few points, and as the game was one of twenty-five; heads, the centre representatives pull-, ed themselves together to some extent,, but were unable to get on level terms. Australia, eventually won in the aggregate by 13 points. Following are the scores:—
