LEVEL CROSSINGS
A SERIOUS MATTER. Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 9. Tho level-crossing question was mentioned by a deputation to tho Hon. W. H. Herrieß (Minister for Railways.) It asked when the department might be expected to announce a policy in regard to this serious matter. The" Minister stated that he was not prepared to discuss the whole question at the moment, but he could assure them the department was alive to the necessity that something should be done to minimise the danger. Reports upon dangerous crossings all over the country wero being made, and the department might adopt some system of signals and in some cases remove the “stop” notices further back. “It will be impossible,” he continued, “to erect bridges over every level crossing in the Dominion, but if the public will assist us our burdens will be reduced considerably. Complaints from tho en-gine-drivers and other officials are sometimes received of motorists racing trains to crossings, thereby courtingq danger and increasing the anxieties of the railway servants.”
