From Our Own Correspondent. February 2. The Carterton Borough Council bps decidedto reduce the salary to be given to the town clerk from £2OO to £l5O per annum. Their action is generally condemned by townspeople. A memorial service, urns held in the Carterton Methodist Church yesterday in connection with the death of Rev. B. H. Ginger, a former minister of the Carterton circuit, who died at Lower Hutt last week.’

Mr Irving, manager of the Greytown cheese factory, has resigned his position in order to establish a cheese factory on his own account in the Hawke’s Bay district. Mr J. J. Stevenson has been appointed to act in conjunction with Mr 0. Gumming, of Masterton, as agriculture] instructor for the schools in the Pahiatua district. He will occasionally visit Pongaroa, Eketalinna and Levin. The. settlers of Koltawa will tender a farewell soC*#.l on Wednesday to Mr and Mia A, Ross and Mr and Mrs G. Burgess, who are leaving the district in order to reside in Pahiatua. The Rev. R. Richards and Mrs Richards, of Pahiatua, left to-day on a holiday which is to be spent in the north.

Messrs J. D. Wilson, W. O’Malley, E. P. Badger, and H. Shetlander have been appointed 1 judges at tho Pahiatua swimming carnival. The total liabilities of Wilson and Co., sawmillers of Marima, who went bankrupt last week, total £3Bl. The assets are valued at £5lO, leaving a surplus of £179. Among the creditors are G. H. Business people at Pongaroa are at present obtaining their heavy goods from Wellington by steamer, which unships at the Akitio lauding. The freight by Sea and cartage conies to £2 15s 6d per ton, while to bring the goods by sail and to cart them to Pongaroa from Pahiatua amounts to £6 12s par ton. The death occurred at Lower Hutt last week of Mrs Baigent, wife of Mr L. Baigent, a former resident of Hamua. The deceased Was twenty-nine years of age, and' was a daughter of Mr A. E. Tuckwejl, of Hamua. Mr and Mts J. S. Tnpe. of Eketaliuna, are on a visit to Wellington. _ Misses Dora and Nellie Pinbey, wno have been on an extended holiday tour of the South Island, returned to Mas* terton on Saturday. The Pahiatua Motor Company has re. duced the price of carting goods from Pahiatua to Pongaroa from £2 XOs to £2 per ton. The police at Pongaroa made a raid last week on a' house in that district and a prosecution for an alleged breach of the Licensing Act will follow. Mr J. Hunter, of Te Ore Ore, has a splendid crop of New Abundance oats on his farm this year, which will average 100 bushels to the acre. A Maori boy named Reuben performed a plucky act on Sunday afternoon. lA'n other lad named Matthews was bathing in tho Waipoua river, when he got out of his depth. Reuben immediately went to his rescue, and after a desperate struggle got him ashore.
