Sir George Newman, chief medical officer of the Education Board, reports that of six million school children examined, 10 per cent, possessed defective eyesight, 2 per cent, defective hearing, 2 per cent, suppurating ears, 10 per cent, adenoids, 1 per cent, ringworm, 1 per cent, tuberculosis, 86 por cent, heart disease, and over 60 per cent, requiring a dentist. Half a million were physically undermined owing to malnutrition.
