RENEWED PROTESTS IN PALMERSTON. Press Association. PALMERSTON, December 23. An inquest was held to-day cuuearning the death of the old man Stratford, who died as the result of being struck by a train at one of the Square crossings. A verdict of accidental death was returned. . . The coroner expressed the opinion that the speed of trains should be reduced to five miles an hour through the town. . , , Dr Martin, superintendent of tne hospital, said he had now attended five railway fatalities at Palmerston. At a meeting of the Borough Council to-night the Mayor commented strongly upon the failure of ths authorities to take notice of the repeated protests of the town upon the unprotected Condition of crossings in the Square, and a resolution was unanimously passed demanding that something be done.
