ASSOCIATION MEETS IMPORTANT MATTERS DEALT WITH. A meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association was held last evening, there being present —Messrs C. G. M ilson (chairman), Midlano, Fanning, Crombie, Goldfinch, Bay, George, Martin, and Beechoy (secretary). A letter was received from the Canterbury Association stating that it had been decided to appoint Messrs A. Wilson and Handford as umpires, and Messrs Tillvshort and Pollock as scorers, for their match at the New Year. It was also decided to adhere to the dates arranged, and to ask Auckland to come south later in the season. It was decided to ask the New ZOakland Council to endeavour to arrange a match with IVellington by the New Zealand team on its return from the Australian tour, and to offer the council 50 per- cent, of the net “gate. 1 ’ Mr Midlanco was appointed selector of the team for Canterbury, and Air Wilson for the teams to play further south. Alossrs J. Fanning and W. E. A. Gill were appointed honorary members of the association. CHRISTMAS TEAMS. The following team to play Alarlborough on Christmas Day and Boxing Day will leave for Blenheim by the Pateena at noon to-day: Major Hume, Manning, Carter, Bennett, F. Beechey, Galloway, Barker, Bruce, Berry, Cording, and Fanning. The team to play on Christmas Day and Boxing Day against the Wellington representatives who are to tour the South Island has been finally selected as follows:—George, Kinvig, Gourlay, Alills, AloGirr, Warne, McMahon, Harris, Alclntyre, Taylor, and Cullen. DISPUTE WITH AUCKLAND. A difference between the Wellington and Auckland Cricket Associations was dealt with. The secretary reported that he had telegraphed to Auckland relative to arranging a match to bo played here at Christmas. A reply was received stating that Auckland were afraid that unless they could play Canterbury at New Year, the tour would have to be abandoned, but that they might come later on. The telegram from Auckland stated that that association would underbake to play the annual matches with Wellington and Canterbury on suitable dates to be arranged that it was too late now to arrange for Christmas time, but they might come later. On December 10th the secretary wrote stating that the association regretted that the suggestion from Auckland oould not be agreed to. It was pointed out that the following reasons had moved the committee to the decision at which it had arrived:—For many years January Ist, 2nd, and 3rd had been the dates for the Canterbury match. The match was not played on those dates last year, bub lb was desired to get back to them so that the match might be a permanent annual fixture for those days. These dates were undoubtedly more profitable for a match with Canterbury than at any other time. January 9th, 10th, and 12th were much more suitable dates at Dunedin than January Ist, 2nd and 3rd, when the Caledonian sports were held. As a Wellington' team had not been to Otago for some years, it was considered very probable that if suitable dates were arranged that did not clash with any other fixture, the gate would be a good one. Wellington had not played Otago for some years, and, having just concluded arrangements for a visit, jt was considered that although Otago would bo sportsmanlike enough to agree to a suggested alteration of dates, it would feel that it was most peculiar that Wellington should be so anxious to make an alteration to suit Auckland, which had had many matches with all other provinces while holding the shield. It was considered most undesirable indeed to place Otago in that position. That it would ha very unfair to inform Southland that Wellington did not desire to play the match it had arranged was quite ap. parent. Another very important point had been considered. It was jointed out that Wellington might undertake an extensive tour at a very considerable expense, and although from December 25th to January 12th it would play four associations, it might very easily happen that it would not get a match for the Plunket Shield. If Auckland won from Canterbury, Wellington would not get a shield match this season. This association could not possibly send a team to Auckland after undertaking its southern tour. The letter as sent by the secretary was endorsed. AUSTRALIAN CRACKS. Notification was received from the secretary of the Now Zealand Cricket Council that the council had accepted the offer of Mr Arthur Sims, of Christchurch, to bring over a team of Australian cricketers, such team to include six players of international repute. The team will leave Sydney on or about January 28th for Auckland. It will be a fairly strong combination, including Armstrong, Trumper, Ransford, McKenzie, Dr Dolling, Waddy, Noble, and Layer. According to the terms of the tour, Mr Sims’s team are to receive 60 per cent, of the total gross proceeds of each match against the major associations, and no guarantee will be accepted from those associations. The itinerary has not yet been arranged, but Wellington was offered three days, including one Saturday. It was decided to seek further information relative to the sharing of the proceeds of a match. TEMUKA AND THE AUSTRALIANS Press Association. TIMARU, December 23. The South Canterbury Cricket Council having decided that in view chiefly of the difficulty of obtaining a suitable ground it would be inadvisable to try to arrange a match with the Australian team, Temuka residents took up the matter and, believing that the Temuka ground will be in good order, set about getting a guarantee of £SO required. They obtained it to-day. Colonel Hayhurst, Mayor of Temuka, putting down half himself, and offering to advance the other half. NEW SOUTH WALES v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. It states that they started in tho north, believing that they could win a couple of country matches and then take a big beating from Queensland. Accomplishing the unexpected, they beat tho northern Stato in a fashion which stamps the visitors as cricketers with tho hall-mark of fighters in a high situation. The fact that six scored double figures, considering the wickot, says a good deal for the grittiness of the fight put up.
