HOROWHENUA NOTES

At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Horowhenua Lodge, U.A.0.D., it was reported that the lunds had reached over £IOOO. ■ The Otaki Town Board, ever alert to the interest of ratepayers, will probably take steps to prevent sheep being driven through the town during tho time the business places are open. There are several back streets that mav be made use of.

A special collection was taken up at the Otaki Methodist Church yesterday to reduce the debt on the parsonage fund, when a sum of between £lO and £ll was received for the special object. Similar collections are to bo made at all centres in tho southern end of the circuit, so that a good round sum should he secured in all. Miss Hall, of the staff of the Otaki State School will spend her holidays in Wellington, while Miss Miller will sojourn at Pahiatua. The AVoodville School children spent a very pleasant holiday at Paiekakariki last "week. Fine weather was experienced. Children attending the Manakau Methodist Sunday School yesterday received prizes for attendance and good conduct. At a meeting of the Horowhenua Horticultural Society on Saturday night it was reported that despite

much expenditure tho recent show had proved financially a success. An accident of a painful natflre occurred at Otaki on Saturday, when the' bullet from a pea-rifle struck a little girl named Nora Keegan in the leg above tho knee, passing right through. The little sufferer was promptly attended to, and is doing as well as can bo expected. Mr George Noble has sold his interest in the Central Hotel, Otaki, to Mr J, Tullock, of the South Island. This is the second hotel that has changed hands in Otaki during the week. Mr and Mrs Mcßain and family, of Manakau, left this morning for Wellington, where a holiday' will be spent, Mr Harold Sheargold, of Ohau, had a narrow escape from drowning on Saturday while crossing the river at Muhunoa East. It was only with difficulty that he regained terra firma. Mrs Richard Bevan, of Manakau, has generously given a, pass to each of the children attending the Manakau School, which will admit them to a picture display during tho week. An effort is being made to revive the Te Horo branch of tho New Zealand Farmers’ Union, and as a result of inquiries made to headquarters a. meeting was called for Wednesday evening last, when Mr Fowler (the organising secretary) attended and gave an excellent on the working of the union andMts advantages. There was only’ a moderate attendance, hut those who did attend appeared to bo alive to their own interests. It was intimated that a, number of farmers not present wished to join. A' branch ,was successfully formed, Mr G. Glacken being elected secretary and treasurer, and Air Eli Aden chairman for the current term. A vote of thanks to Air Fowler foi his very interesting address brought the meeting to *a close. There was a splendid gathering ol adults—the members of the school committee being also in strong force —at tho Te Horo schoolliouse on Thursday afternoon, when tho annual distribution of prizes took place. Mr H. AVindley (chairman of the committee) officiated, making a few appropriate remarks. After tho prize distribution all present were regaled with afternoon tea, provided by- tho committee and ladies in the well-known To Horo hospitable fashion. With the exception of the class prizes, the prizes were special trophic® donated by well-wishers. They were a fine lot of awards. Following is the list; —Standard Mil., Gilbert Hayward.
