NEWTOWN SCHOOL

The breaking-up proceedings at the Newtown school were marked by great enthusiasm, the majority of the committee being present, and also many parents. Several infant classes were first visited, and the children were visited by Airs Evans and Mr J. Castle, the senior scholars were then assembled in the large schoolroom. Air Castle congratulated the teachers and scholars on the work done during the year. He specially referred to the large number of first-class ah tendance certificates—namely, 50— awarded to pupils who had attended every time school was open during the year. Seventy-two second-class certificates were also awarded to those who had not been absent more than five half-days the year. There were 43 proficiency certificates also presented.

The dux of the girls’ division proved to be Nellie Jones, who received a gold medal, presented by Air J. Castle. The boys’ dns this year was John McPheo, who also received a gold medal, presented by Air H. Crengel. Mrs Boxall, president of the Women’s Christian^Temperance Union, was present, and called upon Airs Evans to present the prizes given by the union for the temperance essays, which had been judged by the Bey. W. A.‘Evans, as follows:—Girls: Minnie AlcCauley 1, Ivy Bain 2. Boys : Edwin Wilson 1, Gilbert Parkinson 2.
