The Hamburg-Amerika lino has decided on a sweeping reduction of rates without waiting for a meeting of tho North Atlantic Conference on January 21st. Other companies, headed by the Norddeutscher Lioyd, have decided on similar reductions. Disastrous rate-cutting is regarded as certain when the pooling arrangements cease on December 31st. Tho quarrel is connected with the Hamburg-Amerika line desiring a larger share of the steerage traffic, which tho Norddeutscher Co. refused.
