The Appeal Board sittings were formally adjourned yesterday to tho 13th prox., on count of the Christmas and New Year vacation. Dr R. H. "Makgill, district health officer at Auckland, will forthwith resume his duties, after six mouths’ absence in England and America. Dr Makgill arrived by the Niagara on Wednesday in restored health. Dr Finch, district health officer at Christchurch, who has been relieving, bas returned south. Yesterday morning Mr George H. Mason, president of the Canterbury Rugby Union and manager of tlio “An Black” team which toured California, arrived in Wellington by tho Main Trunk express from Auckland, accompanied by the 'Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland members of tho team. A Press Association telegram from Westport announces the sudden death of Mrs Gifford (wife of Mr A. Gifford, a teacher of secondary classes at the High School). Mrs Gifford was travelling in a motor-car to Nelson, when she collapsed, and died ten minutes after starting. Mr Gifford left on Thursday to cycle to Nelson, en route to tho Chess Congress at Auckland. He is a cousin of Mr A. O- Gifford, who is one of the masters at Wellington College. Miss Doris Gavin, teacher at the Karori school, has resigned from the Education Board’s service to take up work in a secondary school. After the prizegiving the teachers met and presented her with a token of tho great esteem in which she is held, both by every member of the staff and also by the children of the school. In suitable terms, Mr Bennett, the headmaster, referred to her four years’ connection with the school staff, and wished her every success in. her future sphere of work. As Mr A. R. Atkinson is about to leave for a trip to England, the executive of the New Zealand Alliance took the opportunity last evening of show', ing its appreciation of his many ser. vices to tho temperance cause by entertaining him at dinner in tho Y.M.C.A. rooms.
