HOSPITAL AFFAIRS

MEETING 'OF THE BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: The Rev. W. A. Evans (chairman), Mrs D. McLaren, Rev. J. K. Elliott, Rev. H. Van Staveren, Dr Mackenzie, Messrs 1). Campbell, 1' - Castle, H. Freeman, W. Galloway, B. R-, Gardener, D, McLaren, J. W. McEwan, G. J. Petherick, J. Smith, G. Nash, and D. Robertson. The returns for the fortnight ended December Bth showed that 142 patients had been admitted and 165 discharged, leaving 300 in the hospital. The inmates were distributed, as follows: Victoria Ward 40, Seddon Ward 18, fever ward 37, children’s ward 46, general 159; total, 300. The health inspectors reported that for the . month ended December 9th they had investigated sixty cases of infectious disease, as follows:—Scarlet fever 33, diphtheria 3, tuberculosis 8, enteric fever 1, blood-poisoning 1, chicken-pox 14. The total cases in the corresponding period of last year (chicken-pox not then being notifiable) were 38. During the month there had been 81 disinfections, 68 -sanitary inspections, and 56 re-visits. Fifteen, visits were made in connection with the Sale of Pood and Drugs Act, and 119 boxes of apples were seized and destroyed. On the motion of Mr Gardener it was decided to ask the Government to notify the board of any proposed alterations to the public health or charitable aid statutes, -
