NO MORE RACEHORSES
TO BE SHIPPED SOUTH. Shortly after 10 a.m. the Strike Committee again considered tho question of whether any more racehorses which are to take part in the New Zealand Cup meeting at Chfistchurch should bo allowed to proceed south. Later in the morning, a member of the committee made the announcement to the open-air meeting which was in progress in the square that the picket* had been instructed that no more racehorses were to be allowed to pass on to the wharves. Loud cheers ahS appla'ose followed this statement. Almost simultaneously a racehorse, in charge, of a trainer, appeared at the Queen’s Wharf gates. Pickets and strikers immediately surrounded it, and after some argument the trainer turned the animal back. The Strike Committee informed Mi J. H. Pollock, handicapper for tho Wellington Racing Club, about midday that no more horses were to b*. allowed to go through the gates oo to the wharves. It was a coincidc.no* that the Strike Committee had been sent the following letter not more than a few minutes previously:— Mr F. Curtice, President, Waterside Workers’ Union. Dear Sir,—l have been asked by the trainers and attendants of the racehorses engaged at the C.J.O. meeting to tender you their thanks for promptly calling the members of
your union together, and obtaining their consent to allow the shipment of the horses without delay on Monday. Tho sportsmanlike action of tho waterside workers is heartily appreciated.—Yours sincerely, J. 11. Pollock, for trainers. Wellington, October 29th.
