TEACHERS’ EXAMINATIONS

FEES NOT TO BE ABOLISHED. The Hon. James Allen, in reply to Mr J. H. Escott (Pahiatua), said in the House yesterday that tho cost of tho public examinations was very heavy, and although Parliament saw fit last year to abolish tbo fees payable for tho Public Service examinations, yet ho was not prepared to throw the extra burden upon tho public funds of meeting tho whole cost of teachers’ examinations. A great deal was being done now to enable nncertificated teachers to qualify for certificates. Classes were being held in all the education districts for their benefit, the cost being met by annua] grants. Mr Allen added that the cost of the examinations held by the department last year was about £2uuo above the fees received; further, it was found that tho abolition of fees causes the entry of candidates who have no serious intention of sitting for tho examination, causing work in the preparation of papers, and so on, and consequent expense without any corresponding benefit.
