HOROWHENUA NOTES

From Our Own Correspondent. OTAKI, Tuesday. Two smart arrests were made at Otaki yesterday one at 3.30 p.m. and the other at 7.15 p.m. —when two young men, Henry McGill and Kara Takarore, were apprehended on a charge of alleged theft, which, it is understood, both now admit. It appears that a number of youths—McGill, Hara, Dowsie, Thompson, and McDonald—wero having a convivial evening at [Joe Hohipuha’s, who, rumour hath it, ‘has just been left a sum of money. (Temptation evidently was there, and 'when the party disbanded Joe was minus the sum of nearly £SO. Tho matter was reported to Constable Batherley, who ascertained the facts that the theft took place between 10.30 on Saturday night and 4 o’clock ,ou Sunday morning. The constable was soon on tho trail, with the above result, and also with the result that all the money will probably bo returned to its rightful owner. The two accused appeared before Mr William Tompsitt, J.P., this morning, McGill charged with the theft of £3O, and Hara with the theft of a cheque for £l9 18s. Constable Satherley, in asking for a remand, said that ho had not had time to secure witnesses, and further that three witnesses would bo away for a few days. Ho strongly objected to bail, stating that all the money bad not yet been secured. A remand for eight days was granted. Mr and Mrs W. Carter, who are leaving Moutoa to tako up residence in Palmerston, were farewelled at a gathering at Foxton last evening, when they were made the recipients of a silver ink stand, butter cooler, and cake stand. Regret was also expressed at their projected departure. A musical programme was contributed, after which “Auld Lang Syne” was sung. Mr J. Malcolm, engineer for the Horowhenua County Council, has inspected tho groynes damaged by flood water at Waikanae. He considers the injury caused will amount to about £25, although it is yet impossible, on account of the flooded state of the river, to give an exact estimate. Only four members of the Mauawatu Bowing Club attended the annual meeting at Foxton last night, consequently tho meeting lapsed. Tho “waking up” of the boys’ department of tho Levin Y.M.C.A. took place last night, and was well attended. During tho evening trophies won during the season by various members wore presented. Tho annual report was also read, and considered very satisfactory.
