“HANDS UP !”

A daring crime occurred .at Broken Hill on Sunday night, when two masked and armed men bold up tbo Broken Hill to Adelaide express between Sulphide street station and Railway Town station, and got away with two cash boxes containing between £.IOO and £l5O in notes, gold and silver. The distance between the platforms is only ono mile, and the “hold-up was cleverly planned. A ticket clerk named McGuire deposited the cash boxes in the guard s van, and McGuire, a guard named Pinlayison, and an assistant guard named Hawes remained in the van. Tho express departed at 8.30 p.m., and had only gone two chains when the two masked men jumped aboard, crawled along tho footboard to the van, smashed the windows with an iron bar, presented revolvers, and yelled “Hands up 1” One desperado remarked to the other:—“Keep them covered, while I get in. If you have any rot from them shoot them.” The speaker then scrambled in, hurled tho cash boxes but of the window, and got out. Then the pair jumped off the train, which was going slowly. They picked up tho boxes, and rushed through an adjacent wood-yard. A lady passenger caw them disappear in the darkness. All this happened almost in town. A porter saw tho robbers leave tho train. He pursued them fruitless-

ly. The police immediately scoured the ilstrict, but without success.
