COLUMBIA WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. The final match to decide championship honours for tho season was played at tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, before a good attendance' of lacrosse enthusiasts. Tho contestant® were Columbia and Capitol, whose previous meetings in the cup matches had resulted in a win for each against tho other, and also a drawn game, so that a close contest for the final was anticipated. This prediction was verified, as after an exceedingly well-contested game, Columbia left the field victors, ohd local champions, by the narrow niorgin of three goals to two. THE PLAY. Immediately after the face-off,” J. Konkin, the Capitol centre, secured, and running strongly found the, net with a long, fast shot. Capitol 1, Columbia. O. Capitol.continued to attack, but tho Columbia defence successfully repelled them, and play was transferred to the Capitol.goal, Leyden and Casey shooting without success. Kama next . tried a shot, which just missed tho net,, and Turner, the Capitol goal-keeper, securing, transferred upfield. The Capitol attack looked dangerous, and ' after some good passing between . Hubbard, Andrews, and R. Rankin, .the letter's shot was iveu stopped hy the Columbia,, keeper (Thomas). Tho Columbia attacking quartette, Leyden, Casey, Fama, and Grant, then took charge of the ball, and after some good combination. Fama SOnb homo a good shot.. Capitol 1, Columbia X. Shortly afterwards Leydon secured from a pass by Tiller, and, running in strongly, notched the second goal for tho blacks. Capitol 1, Columbia 2. This ended the first quarter. The play in the second and third quarters was of a givo-and-takc nature, each side attacking strongly id turn, attd only the sound defence of O’Leary, Baker, Quinn, and Gallagher, for Columbia, and Went ton, Rankin, and Burge, for Capitol, prevented an increase of tho scores. Repeatedly good saves were mad© by tho goal-keepers, Thomas, in particular, clearing well the many Capitol attempts at goal. Halftime and three-quarter time showed the score still Columbia 2, Capitol 1. In the last quarter Columbia showed to tho better advantage, and tho full resource of tho Capitol defence was tested timo and again. Eventually Fama, receiving .possession from Leyden, made a good run, and his shot just beat Turner. Columbia 3, Capital I. Capitol now tried hard to increase ■their tally, and much long shooting was indulged in, when a pass to a horn© player might have been more effective, i Th© black defence was kept very busy for a while, and eventually transferred the hall to their own attack. Casey, Grant, and Fama in turn had shots which wero well stopped by Turner. With only a few minutes to play, tho Capitol attackers made a last rally, and wore not to ho denied. B. Renkin found the net,, and made the scores: Columbia 3, Capitol 2. Timo was called soon afterwards, leaving Columbia entitled to possession of the Proud Cup until nest season. This trophy has now been won twice by Kelburne and once Capitol and doinmbia. Mr J- id. Ryder was referee.
