PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Petone Borough (xmncil was heiu on Monday. Present—The Mayor (Mr J. W. McEwan). and Councillors J. vV. List, T. Townsend, C. P. Biockiebauk, VV. Cox. B. Jones, W. Trueman, and A. Anderson. A copy ot a resolution passed by the Hutt Valley No-license League, objecting to the sale of intoxicating liquor on the liutt Park, was received. _ An application was received from tho Petone Cricket Club for the use of three pitches on the recreation ground for the cricket season. —Referred to tho recreation ground committee. Tho Freedom League applied for permission to hold a public meeting on the recreation ground on Sunday, July 20th. —Councillor List said the council should not allow men to come to Petone and how] against the laws of the country.— Permission was granted. A deputation waited upon the council urging the extension of Richmond street through to Islington street.—ln replying, the Mayor said tho question was under discussion when the year’s estimates were under consideration. It was found that this work, among others of an equal value, had to be dispensed with in order to keep the rates at the same figure as last year. On the recommendation of the committee set up for tho purpose, the council resolved —yl) That Mr Wilford be asked to move that an additional clause be inerted in the proposed Bill to amend the Municipal Corporations Act giving power to local bodies to subscribe tho coat of constructing and maintaining boat harbours; (2) that the Wellington Harbour Board bo asked to state the terme upon which it is proposed to erect a boat harbour at Petone, as shown upon the plan prepared by the borough engineer and that the board be asked to receive a deputation froiu the council and Heretauuga Boating Club upon the subject. A number of suggested alterations by tho Horowhenua County Council to the modus operand! now in vogue in regaid to the election of representatives on the hospital and charitable aid boards was leit to the local member to deal with. Councillor Anderson moved “'That the motions accepting the resignation of Councillor Wright from the position of delegate on the Hutt Park committee, and the appointment of hi« Worship the Mayor to till the position bo rescinded," m the ground that the standing orders iiad not been compiled with. —The Mayor said that provision is made for an emergency meeting, xnir.y-i-our horns notice was given to trie council.—Councillor Anderson said he did not believe in this oae-iionse management. 'The borough engineer (Mr A. Cowie) reported mat. Korokoro roads had been put iu order. Considerable damage hud been done to streets at the eastern end of the borough through heavy cartage being carried over them. To Funl street was in a disgraceiul condition, and much-needed improvements were being efiected. 'The sandhills behind the seawall were being levelled. A plan is in course of preparation showing how it is propose dto lay out tho reclaimed land, and will be laid on the council table for inspection at its net meeting.
