THE FIRE WASTE
To the Editor “N.Z. Times.” Sir,—l have urged from time to time that the introduction of better
building regulations in the centres of the Dominion would materially reduce tne present high rate of waste, which is going on by fire in New Zealand, and ixave always contended that it is the duty of fcfto Government to appoint a Royal Commission to obtain evidence for the purpose of bringing in uniform building regulations independently of the municipal authorities, in the township of Hamilton, which I may mention promises to become ono of the largest inland towns in the Dominion—if not actually the largest —a “brick area” has been constituted, but the difficulty of enforcing the regulation will be appreciated on perusal of the enclosed report of a recent meeting of the Borough Council. Here we find the Mayor of the town and several councillors seriously proposing that the “brick area regulations” should be waived—'while one of the councillors openly stated that a precedent had been established “on numerous previous occasions.” The proposals of this Mayor and some of the councillors would appear to support my suggestion ,that action in this matter shrould he taken by the Government through Parliament.—l am, etc., F. G. CRAY, Claremont Grove. July 14th, 1913.
