GIJON EXPLOSION
SHIPS STRUCK BY FLYING DEBRIS. MADRID, February 26. The charge used at Gijon harbour, when 60 persons were killed by an explosion, weighed 31 tons. The explosive was intended to level a hill to make a seawall. Gases permeated a fault in the clay. Several ships were struck by flying debris. RESEMBLED VOLCANIC ERUP- • TION. TWO HUNDRED PERSONS’ INJURED. , {Received February 27, 11-20 p.m.) MADRID, February 27. The explosion at Gijon resembled a Volcanic eruption. ' Dismembered bodies were hurled high in the air. ' Five hundred workmen were engaged at the time. Twenty-four bodies have been recovered. f Two hundred person were injured.
