From Our Own Correspondent. MASTERTON, February 26. The following awards have been made by Mr S. Bishop (judge) in connection with the freezing classes shown at the Masterton Show and subsequently slaughtered at the Wamgawa meat worts: —Five Down cross lambs--—W. F. McLaren, 34 jioints, 1 (third at Masterton Show); vV. H. Beetham, 30 points, 2 (unplaced); W. H. Boetham, Z 8 points, 3 (unplaced); fit. fit. Beetham, 27 points, 4 (contended). Four -wethers, Down cross—W. D. O. Tylee, 36 points, 1 (unplaced at show); W. M. Beetham, 35 points, 2 (commended); R. Swainson, 34 points, 3 (unplaced); H. H. Beetham, *53 points, 4 (hrst). Four wethers, Down cross— H. R. McKenzie, 28 points, 1 (h.o. at show); W. McGovern, 25 points, 2 (commended); H. R. McKenzie has won Messrs Hall and Walker’s Onp for the most points in tho freezing classes with 26 points. Mr J. Coradine, solicitor, of Masterton, has passed the second section of his barrister’s professional examination.

An exciting incident at Kaitoke last evening caused the Wellington-Master-ton train to bo half an hour late in reaching its destination. The up train was standing at the station, and, following the usual custom, the NapierWellington train backed into the station on tbe same line. The latter bad too much way on ( ' and collided with tho stationary tram, the guard’s van being derailed and damaged, while the adjoining carriage was also slightly damaged. Tho passengers in the Masterton train received a severe shock, many being thrown off their seats. Fortunately no on© was injured. After the goods in the van had been transferred to a carriage tb© train proceeded on its journey. Yesterday one hundred and hftyeight officers and men of tho local territorials and cadets held a field day at Te Ore Ore, where a very instructive time was spent. There were ninety-five cadets present, twentyeight of the O company, twenty-one of the field ambulance, three staff officers, five permanent staff officers, and six company officers. The C Company indulged in musketry practice, the cadets in field practice, and the Ambulance Corps in stretcher drill and held training, etc. The men returned to Masterton shortly after 7 p.m. Miss F. A. Bedell, mistress at the Belvedere school, has resigned her position in order to take charge of tho Akatarawa school. Mr R. secretary of the Masterton Fire Brigade, has been appointed secretary of the United Districts Fire Brigade Association. Mr M. Grant, of New Plymouth, and formerly of Wellington, will succeed Mr O. I. Harkness on the staff of the Pahiatua branch of the Bank of New South Wales. The members of the Masterton Fire Brigade and also the delegates to the United Fire Brigades’ Conference were entertained by the Masterton Fire Police last night at a smoke concert. In the absence of Captain Dixon, of the Fire Police, Superintendent Jenkins presided. There was a large attendance, and a lengthy toast list was honoured. During the course of tho evening songs and recitations were given by Messrs W. Dixon, P. Gilbert, Gardner, J. Gray, C. Cole, J. West, H. Selby, and J. Hale. ' A petition asking that a poll be taken on the question of the half-holiday in Masterton will come before the next ordinary meeting of the Borough Council. A large number of competitors from Masterton will compete at the Carte* - ton swimming sports to-morrow, over twenty entries having been made. Efforts are being made by tho Bush Boxing Association to arrange a professional contest at Pahiatua shortly. Several Masterton boxers will probably compete at the association’s next tournament. Mr S. Davies, of Carterton, left yesterday on a trip to Christchurch. Mr R. Crawley, conductor of the Carterton band, is at present confined to his bed through illness. Mr and Mrs T. Zißwood, of Carterton, returned last night from a holiday tour through the Feilding, Wanganui and other districts. Coptain Clayton, Dr Clarke, and Mr S. Douglas, of Wellington, who hare been trout fishing in the Wairarapa, returned to Wellington yesterday. Mr and Mrs H. W. Waters, of Featherston, intend to make a trip to England in April next. Mr McAlister, postmaster at Martinborough, who has been away on leave, resumed duty on Monday last. Mrs J. B. Tait, of Ballance, is at present on a visit to ; Masterton. Mrs Van Praagh, of Ballance, who has been on a visit to Masterton, has returned homo. Mrs W. W. McCnrdle and family, of .Pahiatua, are spending a holiday at Akitio. Mrs Reese, of Christchurch, is on a visit to her daughter, Mrs H. Cornelius, of Mangahao. Mr D. M. Pitoaithly, formerly of Eketahuna, has sold Tus farm at Waipawa and lias purchased another property at Toko, near Stratford. Miss O. Roberts, a well-known swimmer from Wellington, will compete at the Masterton ladies’ swimming sports to-morrow. Mr Harold Renall, who recently disposed of his farm at Kaiparoro, has accepted a position as traveller for Messrs J. B. MncEwan and Co. Mr Renall will bo located in the Taranaki district.
