WORKERS AND “CITIZENS”

To the Editor “N.Z. Times.” Sir, —Because Labour is making n ,bid for greater representation on the City Council and other local bodies, the squatters’ organ is endeavouring to awaken “citizens” to “a livelier sense of their responsibilities in the 'matter than at present appears to ex;ist.” This is so like the special advocate of squattedom and aristocracy, to attempt to separate the workers from the “citizens,” and I hope the former will make a special note of this impudent distinction. In fact, even the “Reform” organ itself seems to have been struck with some sense of its own arrogance, for it proceeds with ;a specious watering-down of its proposition. • Thus it asserts in the most approved grandmotherly tone of cunning Toryism that Labour is “entitled to its share in tho control of public atIfairs, and we have welcomed representation from Labour circles as a good 'thing.” Now, sir, will the Conservative paper please say definitely what in its wis'dom it regards as Labour’s “share” in (public or municipal government ? Also, will it show that it has ever given one sincere word of welcome or encourageiment to any candidate for any olbce ;in the public gift who was not a representative of wealth, privilege, monopoly, and—what really comprises these three in one —Toryism P I challenge the squatters’ organ to quote one single instance where, in reference to an election, it has taken tho democratic side as against tho interests of tho enemies of the people. I defy it to submit to this very simple test. The “share” tho squatters’ organ would give to Labour is clearly indicated in its comment.
