THEFT OF MOTOR TYRE
Press Association. INVERCARGILL. February 25. The hearing of the charges against Colin Gerard of theft of a motor tyre and other motor goods was continued in tbs Police Court this morning, before Mr Cruickshank, S-M. Mr H. A. MacDonald, solicitor lot Gerard, gave evidence denying that h® and Gerard had visited Myross Budi to see William Hazlett, from whom Gerard alleged he had received the Rolen tyre.. Counsel detailed his movements on the day on which the visit was alleged to have been made, and called witnesses to substantiate his own evidence that b» could not possibly have been in Myrosa Bush on the day indicated. The Magistrate remarked that he regarded William Hazletfs statement about McDonald as quite irrelevant. Samuel Hazlett, brother of William Hazlett. deposed that Gerard bad taken out his cheque book and said he would give his brother .£IOO if he would swear he got the tyre from Christchurch. The Magistrate said that no doubt the tyre was stolen, and convicted Gerard. Sentence was deferred pending the probation officer’s report. Gerard was further charged with Ilia theft of three tubes, but owing to lack of identification the case was dismissed.
