Press Association. AUCKLAND, February 25. At the Supreme Court Edward McMahon, otherwise known as Edward P. McMahon, pleaded guilty to two charges of forgery and one of personation. He admitted forging an appliestion to transfer the interest in an occupation license with right of purchase, and also admitted forging a document which purported to be a statutory declaration under the Land Act, 1903. Finally accused admitted personating Arthur McMahon with intent to obtain property. All the offences were committed between August and October, 1911. Mr Selwyn Mays, upon accused pleading guilty to three charges, said he would withdraw three further charges, two of obtaining money by false pretences and an additional one of forgery. His Honor sentenced accused to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour on each count, the sentences to be concurrent. He added that his leniency was due to the circumstances of the-case. Verdicts of not guilty were returned in the case of John Robertson, charged with theft at the races, and in the ease of Francis Pilgrim, charged with indecent assault. Prisoners were discharged. NELSON, February 25. At the Supreme Court to-day an elderly man named Andrew Youngdal was acquitted on a charge of indecency. The Nelson sessions are concluded. INVERCARGILL, February 25. The Supreme Court opened to-day. There was no criminal business, and his Honor Sir Joshua Williams was presented with a pair of white gloves. The Crown Prosecutor said that was the fourth occasion during recent years that no criminal cases had been set before the Court. Sir Joshua Williams said it was highly satisfactory that this district and the whole of Otago should be free from serious crime. ‘‘l am glad to say that the habitual criminal does not find the climate of Otago and Southland suited to him. What is the exact reason that there should be so little crime here and so much unfortunately in other parts of the Dominion it is difficult to say.”
