HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Lower Hutt Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. P. Bunny), Councillors Ball, Roots, Kempthorne, Knight, Hobbs, Clendon and Dawson. Mr J. Dawson ; the designer of Helling bridge, intimated that he would he pleased to meet the council in conference in respect to the bridge. A further remittance amounting to £IOOO was received from the Public Trustee, of the £3500 loan. The works and recreation ground oomitteea (joint) reported and recommended that the recommendations of the borough engineer in reference to surface drainage at Alicetown be agreed to, in respect to the northern and southern portions of Victoria and Cuba streets, and for the cleaning of certain sumps. The work to include the extensiqS of the drain to the southern boundary of the school property. The necessity for drainage on Te Momi, as represented by a deputation to the council, is receiving the attention of the committee. An inspection Las been made of all the footpaths recently tarred and sanded, and considerable improvement was noticeable. For the present it is recommended that the paths ■be left in order to see if the colder weather will set the tar. It is recommended that the Gracefield Company be informed that the council will remove the shed complained of at the end of July, and that the agreement with Messrs Ward Bros, is being complied with. In reply to Mr Macaskill, who met with an accident to his horse and trap through a drain being opened up in the main street, the engineer stated that the trench was properly guarded by two lamps on the night of the accident, and rme in position at 11 o’clock at night,_ and if the lamps were subsequently interfered with it was without the sanction of the council or their knowledge. —The council decided to disclaim any liabiljty for the accident. The engineer is to report on a complaint made by Mrs Knight in reference to drainage at the hack of Waiwetn, and the matter of the footpath and street lamp petitioned for by ratepayers at Alicetown. A number of recommendations were made in respect to applications for drainage to properties. The borough engineer (Mr W. J. Roche) reported that the sewerage of Park avenue is completed, including all house connections. About five chains of sewer have been laid in Old Military road. The cost of the work to date (February 21st) amounted to £603 14s 3d. The amount available in the new loan is £7OO. Additions to the reservoir are making good progress, a good deal of the reinforcing steel being in place and the concreting work has been startedTJie cost to date (February 15th) was £574 4s 6d. Great difficulty has been experienced in fixing a line for korbing and channelling Bridge street, owing to the extreme irregularity of the north side. The retaining wall in the street bag been completed at a cost of £lO 4s Sd.
