A suggestion was made at the meet* I ing of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals yesterday that water-troughs might be provided for dogs in the public thoroughfares. Ona member stated that a lady had offered to give £5 towards this object. The society, however, while thanking the lady for her offer, decided it could not see its way at present to undertake the work, and referred her to the City Council. Some misconception seems to havs arisen in regard to the manufacture and sale cf matches in this Dominion. The Phosphorous Matches Act, 1910, prohib ited the use of yellow or white phosphorous in the match manufacturing business after January Ist, 1912. Merchants and retailers were allowed twelve months’ grace in which to get rid of existing stocks. To meet the provisions of the Act Messrs Bryant and May, Bell and Co., Ltd., the well-known New Zealand manufacturers, immediately brought out a special ncn-poisonous wax vesta, which has been and is now procurable throughout New Zealand. The new vesta is said to be most suitable for household and smokers’ use. The manufacturers claim that- it is not only the equal of the previous article in every respect, but that it is made from perfectly harmless materials.
