RACING NEWS

FIXTURES

October 25.—Poverty Bay T.C. October 26, 28.—Wellington K..C. October 23.*—Waverley-Waitotara H.C. October 23, 29.—Gore R.C. October 29, 30.—Greymouth J.C. November 2,4, G, 9.—C.J.C. November 6, 9.—Auckland R.C. TRAINING AT TRENTHAM There was some improvement in the weather yesterday morning at Trenthara, tho rain holding off most of the time, v.-hilo tho biting southerly had blown itself out. The outside of tho oouiso was utilised, but the going, as was only to be expected, was on the heavy side. Those who rose early with tho expectation of seeing some good winding-up gallops were doomed to disappointment. Most of the horses have done a fair amount of racing, and are, therefore, quite ready for the tray, and tra : ners accordingly for tho most part treated their charges to short flutters over throe or four furlongs As usual, Blue Bake was the first to begin, running a smart half-mile. A furlong further was Prosper's task, but ho did not appear to finish too well. Bootle was sent for a mile at threequarter pace, going freely, but the remainder of the Karamu lot were only given easy tasks. ;

Ohligant went attractively in a gallop over sovon furlongs, and ho looks very fit.

St. Felix easily beat tho jumper Hawick in a gallop over a mile, tho pace being on over the last part of the journey.

.Mcrrivonia, looking well, went a mile at a little better than three-quar-ter pace.

Odessa skipped over five furlongs, run in Imin 6 2-ssec. Ho looks none tho worse for his travelling.

Adolicia wont bettor than Gerberga in a half-milo dash, run in 53sec. Nnuraai ran a fast four furlongs, going in quito his old style.

Mira, who seems to have been sharpened up by his run. at Masterton, went in very attractive stylo over seven furlongs, beating a companion comfortably in Imin 37sec.

Tho Aucklander Domino, with O’Shea in the saddle, hit out freely in a smartly-run round, and ho should bo in capital nick for his Cup engagement.

Mount Victoria ran a smart halfmilo, Lockwood’s task being a furlong further.

Ermongarde, Lady Moutoa, and Makara wero associated in a six-furlong spin, tho two former finishing together in a trifle over Imin 20sec.

EquitaSj with a lightweight, ran a clipping six furlongs in Imin 18 2-6seo, going in great stylo. The champion mare seems right at her ■ best. Aloha and Stepney dashed over four furlongs, going freely. Midnight Sun (Berry), Bronze (light boy), and Byron (Dooley) ran a circuit, tho latter pleasing most. Midnight Sun lost ground at the bend, and finished behind tho other pair.

Ladrone and Brown Trout ran six furlongs in Imin 21sec, finishing together. Sea Qneon went attractively over seven furlongs. Crown Pearl, who looks well, was responsible for a smart run over five furlongs. Bobrikoff, who seems to have quite shaken off his lameness, was sent for a couple of circuits at half-paoe. Quite a number of others were out doing short sprinting work or light tasks. Among them were Lady Kilcheran, Ceylon, Dearest, Bracken, Styx, Avatiatia, Atakura, Elevator, Valkyrie, Merry Vale, Gipsy Belle, Dirge, Parky, Goldfinder, Potoa, Secret Link, Guiding Way, Beacon, Ventura, Sanguinary, Theodore, Merry Frank, War Quoen, Tatterley, Jason, Red Book, Daunton, Kelp, Major Webb, Patronale, Simila, The Hague, Hoopoe, Dythoramb, tho Stepka .filly. Prince Laddo, tho Prelude filly, Els well, Silver King, and others.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Judge.”)

Bellah, who did such an excellent gal-, lop at Riccarton a few mornings ago, is apparently amiss, as he has been scratched for all engagements at the Cup meeting.

Stowart Waddell arrived, at Trentham on Wednesday evening with Bollin, Idealism, Sir Tristram, Bootle, Haskayne, Lyrique, Peary, Glade, Gladful and Missile. With such a big team in action some of the stakes should be won by bearers of the “all cerise.”

The Birkenhead gelding Sleacombe, who pulled off the hurdle race at the Poverty Bay meeting yesterday, had not won a race since he beat Te Whetu and Wirral at the Dannevirke spring meeting of 1910,- so that his success was fully due. Wee Rose, who easily won the Trial Handicap at the Poverty Bay meeting yesterday, is a bay oolt by Merriwee from the Seaton Delaval mare Rose Seaton. He is a full brother to Merton.

The spring meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club will be brought to a conclusion to-day. A. Hall brought North East and Phroso from Wanganui yesterday, and they were shipped south by the Mararoa Last night. The well-known stallion Conqueror (Medallion —Siesta) won first prize for the best thoroughbred stallion at the Wairarapa Show at Carterton. A. Oliver returned from his trip to Australia by the Maitai on Wednesday, and was out riding work at Trentham yesterday. The second payments for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, of 1000 eovs reduced the list of 23 to 18. At the present time St. Swithin is favorite for the race, with Bavenschild and Bedchild among tne short-priced list. It by no means follows that the best yearlings always fetch the highest prices, and the instances of expensive tailures are legion. In the Debutant Stakes at Caulfield all the high-priced ones went down before two youngsters that the big buyers would not look at. Aboyne, the winner cost 150gns, while Ordinal, who ran second, only brought lOOgns. Behind them finished Macduff (ISOOgns), Pinkerton (725gns), Wise King (SSOgns), and a number of others who had each cost a good round sum in the sale ring. United States, the sine of Uncle

Sam. winner of the Caulfield Cup, won tho V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes as a cwe-year-old, hue when sent to the stud breeders fought shy of him. Sir Rupert Clarke eventually sent tho horse up to one of his Queensland stations, where, of course, ho had no chance, Ho is a half-brother to Hova, and his dam, Happy Land, was a half-sister by .Musket to the successful New Zealand sire, St. Lcger. Ho is, in fact, one of tho host bred horses the St. Simon stallion Bill of Portland loft behind him, and it may ho that he will now bo rescued from obscurity.

Tho Nowmiustor maro Melyl, tho dam of the Caulfield Cup winner, was purchased by Mr \V. Reid for lodgns. It was -a rare bargain, for the half-sis-ter to Wallace has bred some smart performers, among them being Knox, BoinnamhuJisc, and Uncle Sam. Knox won some good races before going to Ceylon, and so d.d Somnambulist, who is now in West Australia. Uncle Sam, with a Toorak Handicap and a Caulfield Cup to his credit, is perhaps the best of the lot.

The New Zealander Gunboat won a big race in India last month. This was tho Aga Khan’s Cup, of 8250r5., one mile and a half. Tho race carries with it a cup valued at .£loo—presented by the Aga Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan, G.C.I.E. It was a groat finish resulting in Gunboat getting his head in front of the Australian Vavasor, with Hilarity a head off third. On the same day tho English maro Lamination easily defeated the Now Zealander Soultime over five furlongs, the once invincible son of Soult being unable to make any impression at all upon a maro that he could at ono time fairly lose. Gunboat ran in tho colors of T. Scott, hut now belongs to a very distinguished owner, this being H.H. the Kour Sahis of Patiala.

The Portland Plato, of 1000 sovs, run at Doncaster last month, had something of an international flavor about it. Tho race fell to Wether’s Well (St. Bredan—Phrosporina), Cigar second, the two Americans Castleton and Runnymode next, followed by tho French colt Nomeroe and the American Bashti. Some of tho fastest horses in England were engaged.

Tho old-established Doncaster Cup, which dates back to 1801, petered out rather badly this year, only ono horso being found willing to oppose that groat colt Prince Palatine, who won anyhow. Shogun was considered by many to bo tho champion two-year-old in England, but Craganour has decisively proved his claim to the title, having now beaten Air Hulton’a colt three times, at Ascot, in the Doncaster Champagne Stakes, and in tho Middle Park Plate. The Desmonds have proved smashing good two-year-olds, but they do not always train on, as wo saw in the caso of Lomond, otherwise Craganour appears to bo just the type of colt to win tho Derby next year. Carbine’s son Fowling Piece is making something of a reputation as a stallion in England. At Manchester his two-year-old daughter Waiontha won the Autumn Breeders’ Foal Plate, of 1000 sots,, while another filly, Beldame, by the same sire, won a selling race on the same day.
