NOT LABOR AGITATORS

To the Editor "N.Z. Times." Sir, —-As one 'of those who sat on the recent Federation of Labor Conference in this city in May-Juuo last. X feel called upon to take exception to the remarks made by one Kev. J. Cocker » a reunion (whatever that may mean) on the Auckland Town Hall. At the conference I refer to we decided to refrain from dealing with matters concerning religion, except in case of an attack, such as .the one in. question. This reverend gentleman, • however, is spoiling for a fight, and if so then let him have it. He insults the workers of today by placing them in the same position as those of fifty years ago. Further, this follower of Christ talks of “physical chastisement." He talks of pluck, independence, and faith (faith in, what?). The gauntlet is thrown down by this reverend gentleman and those who are interested in “'Church and labor" efforts towards doing something for the workers through coming to some understanding should watch him. At the present time in New Zealand the man most before the public is Mr Semple, and this I do say, ho is honest in his intentions and true to the cause he professes to fight for. If the rev. gentleman is out to fight, I feel capable of proving to every foirminded individual in New Zealand that the same cannot be said of him.—l am, etc., M. LABACY. Wellington, October 21st.
