CANADIAN CADETS

ARRIVE IX NEW ZEALAND. WELCOMED AT INVERCARGILL AND BLUFF. Press Association. INVERCARGILL, October 21. Tlie touring Canadian Cadets, numbering sixty-lour, reached the Bluff by the Manuka at o a.m., where they were welcomed by the Mayor, Colonel Bauchop. Major Watson, and Captain Hickey. They left the steamer at II a.m. and were subsequently entertained at lunch by the people of Bluff. The Mayor (Mr W. Hinchey) and Captain E. A. Nichol cordially welcomed the visitors, and Captain 11. N. Davy, officer in charge of tho cadets, replied. He said their visit would strengthen tho bonds that bound tho Empire together. When a country had great ambitions it would do great things, and a country with small ambitions would do small things. Tho centre of commercial activity was shifting from the Atlantic to tho Pacific, and they felt that it was absolutely necessary that tho overseas dominions should got closer together in order that in time of trouble they would be abito assist each other. Ho hoped that the time was not far distant when they would have the pleasure of welcoming to Canada a New Zealand cadet corps. The cadets were received by a crowd in Invercargill and given an exceedingly hearty welcome. They were briefly addressd by the Mayor (Mr W. B. Scandrctt), and Captain Davy again replied. The physique of the cadets was surprisingly good considering that their ages range from fourteen to nineteen years. They are stoutly and strongly built, and look as though they would give a good account of themselves. They march to tho music of drums and bugles, and the fancy drumming is clever and entertaining. This evening tho cadets were entertained by the Navy League at a conversazione, and to-morrow they will be taken for a motor drive and afterwards play a football match against the local cadets. They are all being billeted I residents. They speak in the highest terms of their Australian tour.

TIMARU, October 21. Arrangements are being made to give the Canadian Cadets a good time during tboir call at Timaru. Most of them will be billeted with residents. They arrivd on Labor Day, when the children’s sports are expected to draw a big gathering to the bay.
