SEARCH PARTY DRIVEN BACK BY FUMES.

A party of mine men descended to the 700 feet level of the' Lyell mine for the purpose of recovering the bodies of the remaining dead, but noxious fumes compelled them to retreat.
The blast furnace has been allowed to run down, and smelting ia discontinued for the present.
KING EXPRESSES SYMPATHY
MELBOURNE, October 20,
Lord Denman, Governor-General, has received a cable message from the Secretory of State for the Colonies expressing +ho sympathy of the King and Government with sufferers by the Lyell disaster.
of the Federation of Labor, the following resolution was moved by Mr Glover, seconded by Mr Semple, and approved with bare heads Ire the assemblage:—"That this meeting of Wellington citizens tender our sincere sympathy to those who are suffering and heart-broken through the loss of relatione and loved ones by the dreadful disaster at Mount Lypll.” The resolution was cabled to Lyell by Mr Glover. A similar resolution was carried at the federation meeting in the Empress Theatre last evening.
