October 11. His Excellency Lord Islington -will be the guest of Hr G. P. Donnelly for a tew nays during show week. During his visit here the Governor will open the W aiohiki cheese factory, and also visit the golf links. News of the death at Leipsic, Germany, of Mrs it. P. William*, formerly of tne Whakatu estate, near Clive, was heard with general regret in this district. The deceased was travelling with her daughter. Miss Kthelwyn, wno is pursuing her musical studies under Herr Lambrino, of Leipsic. Among the wreaths sent were those of Miss White (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs Dixon (Napier), Miss Daly (America), and Herr Lambrino. Deceased was interred in Sudfriedhop cemetery on August 26th. Mr and Mrs H. M. and W. H. Bathbone (Waipawa) are in Wellington this week for Miss F. Eathbone’s wedding. The Hlufi Hill Croq.net Club were fortunate in having perfect weather for their opening day on Wednesday, when a large number of members and friends gathered at the courts. Mrs Henry Wood (Christchurch) has returned home after a visit here. A very successful fancy dress skating carnival was held in the Gaiety Electric Rink on Monday night. The costumes showed great variety, and in some cases were very original. The East Coast railway was represented as dead, and in its coffin, and a musical chairs competition was won by Miss J. Toman, Gibbon, Kendall, E. Robinson, Tong, Burden, Peat, Tickner, Otter, E. Farrelly, Messrs Le Bas, H. R. Chisholm, A. Wills, J. Campbell, Leitch, Gould, Brookes, Blundell, Bradshaw, Powell, and Raynes. The Plimraer-Denniston Company played a three nights’ season in tho Theatre Royal this week to crowded houses. A few of those ill the audience on Saturday at ‘‘A Woman of No Importance” were:—Mrs Kettle, black satin, silver embroidered overdress; Mi's J. Vigor Brown, black satin: Miss R. Seale, pale blue and silver; Miss Hamilton, white lace; Sirs Bowen, green; Mrs Ferguson, cream silk.

Dir and Mrs H. E. Beamish (Hastings) have gone on a holiday to Christchurch. St. Augustine’s branch of the Gills’ Friendly Society hold their last meeting for the 1912 season on Tuesday evening in the schoolroom, when there was a large attendance of members and associates. After a pleasant evening ringing cheers were given for Canon and Dlrs Tuko.

Dir and Mrs E. V. Hudson (Hastings) ar© spending a fortnight in Wanganui. Dir and Dlrs B. J. Dolan are visiting Taupo for a few weeks.

Dir, Dlrs, and Dliss Abraham (Palmerston North) aro visiting Napier. Dtisses Gilbertson and Irwin, of Waipukurau, intend visiting England. Dir and Dlrs Dtills (Boyston, Marten) arrived here by motor this week, and aro staying a -week or two.

Dluch intcerst was taken in the scout ball held in the new Library Hall at Rissington, visitors being present from Napier, Petane, and Patoka. The hall was gaily decorated with flags, and the music was supplied by Dlrs E. Hutchinson and Dlrs Absolum. A dainty supper was handed round by the scoiits, and during an interval the colors were presented to the patrol by Dlrs F. Hutchinson, and acknowledged by Scoutmaster Cooksey, Dlisses Williams looked dainty in rod cross nurse uniforms. Dancing was kept up till a lato hour.
