NOTES AND COMMENTS (By *’Tho Judge.*’) Mr 11, Taklo. of Dannevirko, baa been appointed secretary (o tbo Dannovarke Racing Club in succession to Mr J., bpiere Freeman, who had to relinquish his position owing to ill-health. The steeplechase meeting of ill© Mana- , watu Hunt is to take placo at the M.B.Uracecourse at Awapuni on Wednesday next. A good class of hunter is engaged, and there is every prospect of an enjoyable outing. The Foxton Bacing Club appointed Mr L. Proctor caretaker of the racecourse. Air Proctor is well suited for the position, having been connected with horses all hie lifo. Ho trained Lochado, who won the 1902 Hawke’s Day Steeplechase. Some interesting items appear in the V.R.C. report nnd balance-sheet, which nos just been issued. During the last twelve months tho club disbursed £63,275 in stakes, and the year's operations show a surplus of £13.986. The profit on the spring meeting was £20,402. and only three meetings—the autumn, August and October fixtures —resulted in a loss. Additions ana alterations to tho course about to bo undertaken will involve an expenditure of £25,t00. Tho Government license foe and tax for tho twelve months amounted to £4729. Under tho heading of salaries are —secretary £IOO3. bandicapper £750, stipendiary stewards £975 (of which other clubs contribute £456). starter £250 and Judge £253. The club’s credit balance on June 30th was £43,337. Mr H. Brinkman, the well-known trotting bandicapper, has not been enjoying the best of health of late, but he is now on the high road to good health. Tho Australian Jockey Club recently received applications from 514 bookmakers and 527 bookmakers' clerks. Evidently laying 'em is still a profitable calling in New South "Wales. A. AI. Wright, the Foxton owner-trainer, is due to pass through Wellington on Wednesday next with Tho Bover, who claims engagements at Riccarton. The son of Advance and, Polly Perkins is reported in capital tnm. Morohiko has been leased by Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P., from Mr H. Hassall, and will run in his new lessee's interest at tho Grand National meeting. Evadno, half-sister to Theodore, Sublime, and Diavolo, who Is wintering at hei owner's (Mr P. Neaglo) place at Meanee, has filled out into a fin© type of thoroughbred, and will go into active work at the end of this month. J. Mann has leased Walpureka to Mr W. J. Douglas, and the mare will carry the black jacket and heliotrope at Biccarton next week. Mr F. Crossloy, veterinary surgeon, leaves for Te Aut© to-morrow to operate upon the Eonown—Eland filly Axis for "roaring” troubles. Some critics are selecting Bourrasque to earn distinction as a hurdler. The Sou'wester gelding is engaged in tho Trial Hurdles at Biccarton. A. Shearsby has put Makara into work at Awapuni, The St. Clements gelding bears a very healthy appearance. Papamarama, who has been leased by the Awapuni trainer, E. Watson, will be given his first run in his new lessee’s colours at the Manawatu Hunt meeting next Wednesday. Tho "Highden” stable will be represented bv Lockwood and Oakum at the Manawatu Hunt meeting. Master Theory is still very lame, and is a doubtful starter at Biccarton. Royal Arms and Paritutu have done BDme excellent training work since reaching Biccarton. Some critics are selecting the latter to put up a big fight in the (Grand National Steeplechase. In all probability J. Williamson, the [Auckland trainer, will take Hautere and •Okaihau to Sydney at the conclusion of the Grand National meeting to compete in steeplechasing events at the A.J.C. spring meeting. Owing to Frank Wootton's suspension for reckless riding, says a Press Association cable message from London, Mr Wootton abandons training, and sells his horses in October.
