AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE SHIPS’ BOATS. HAFTS, AND MEANS OF LAUNCHING. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright LONDON, August, 2. A special committee, with Professor J. H.* Biles (the well-known authority on naval construction, and a member of Lord Mersey’s Titanic Inquiry Commission) as chairman, has been appointed to advise the Board of Trade as to the most efficient arrangements for stowing boats on liners and the best means of launching them expeditiously in an emergency. Other points on which the committed will make inquiry and formulate recommendations are to what extent mechanical propulsion should supplement or supersede oars and sails, and to what extent rafts of an approved character may be utilisablo. It is also to make any other recommendations it may find advisable concerning the safety of life at sea.
