LOCAL TOURNAMENTS,
Despite the wintry weather four games wore played last week in the Wellington Chess Club’s annual “Petherick" tourney, the leading scores in which are now:—Jolly 7i —li, Barnes 6i —li, Fouhy 7—2, Gyles, sen., 6—l, and Carman 4 —3. In the ladder match for rung 11 Purchas (defender) won the first game from Gyles, sen. (challenger). As the result of another week’s play at the Working Men’s Club the best scores in . their chess tourney are as follows: — Burgess s—l,5 —1, .Wild 5 —2, Gandy 4—2, Mowtoll '6—l, Koster 3 —2, Barnes 2 —2. felling 2—2, Eton 2—2, C. Reid 2 —2, and Key 3i —3i. The draughts tourney is a sealed handicap contest, but the best scores to date are: —Erickson 10 —0, Colville 15J—4i, J. Keid 6—2, J. Wilson 6—2, and J. M. Wilson 3 —l.
At a special general meeting held op Monday last a vote of thanks was accorded Mr Coulter for the draughts ladder presented by him. The necessary rules were adopted and challenges can now be issued. Mr C. Erickson, as clubthe tributes to his efforts Mr Lightfoot having now completed his third term as chairman several members voiced their appreciation of his efforts to advance the s'.ster games, and expressed the ' hope that ho might again be associated with them in this work. In acknowledging the tributes to his efforts Mr Light fool said the work referred to had been a real pleasure. ' He heartily wished them a continuance of past prosperity. (Applause.) The Wellington South Club's tourney is rapidly approaching completion. B. B. Allen, who is leading, only has one move to play, viz., the game in which he concedes the odds of knight to Belt. The best tallies to date are as follows: —Allen 7 —l. Armstrong -ll—ls, Purohas 4J —11, Welton 4 —3, Thompson 4 —3, Harper 4 —4, and Belt 3 —4. The leaders in the Wellington East Club’s first tourney are now as follows: Purchas 4 —o, Gyles, sen. 2 —o, Ward 2 —X, Grigg 2—l, Lesueur 3 —2, S. Gyles 2—2, and Collins 2—2. The unfinished game S. Gyles v. Purchas will also count as the first game in the ladder match for rung 2, the former being challenger.
