MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 2. (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S-M.j • ASSAULT CHARGE REDUCED. After several remands, Thomas Patrick Pritchard was dealt with on a charge of assaulting Neil MoDougall, quartermaster on the Morayshire, on July 16th, so as to cause actual bodily harm. . His Worship, after hearing the evidence, reduced the charge to one of common assault. It appeared that the trouble arose through accused trying to board the Morayshire whilst he was in an intoxicated condition. As accused had been in orison for about three weeks, his Worship entered a conviction and discharged Pritchard. PROCEEDINGS WITHDRAWN. Alexander Maxwell was charged with absenting himself without leave from the steamer Brisbane. Mr P. J. O’Regan, who appeared for accused, said that yesterday morning defendant had an altercation with the ship’s cook, who desired to forcibly reply with a meab-a;#. Becoming afraid, defendant,. without permission, went ashore to lay an information against the cook. As soon' as his absence was noticed an information was laid against Maxwell. The latter stated that he did not want to leave the vessel, and as the captain was willing to take him back the proceedings were withdrawn.

DRUNKENNESS AND PROHIBITION ORDERS.

Convicted and discharged tor insobriety, Cnrrie Corbett was fined £3, in default twenty-one days, for breaking the conditions of , her prohibition order and £2, in default twenty-one days, for using obscene language. Patrick Rice, for breaking the conditions of his prohibition order, was fined £3, in default twenty-one days. For insobriety, Frederick Blacklidge was fined 40s, in default twenty-one days, and a prohibition order was issued against him, and Hazel Stanley was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours.

Four first-offenders were leniently dealt with. FRIGHTENING THE DOGS. Walter Armstrong pleaded guilty to firing a miniature shotgun within the city without the permission of the city council, and was ordered to pay court costs, 9s. Defendant used the gun to frighten some dogs which were running over his garden. WANDERING STOCK. On informations of allowing stock to be at large John Campbell and Edward Bloomfield were ordered to pay costs, £1 Is fid.
