The terms are published of the award made by the joint conciliation board appointed to inquire into the Newcastle colliery troubles, and particularly the miners' demand for abolition of the afternoon shift. While refusing to abolish this shift the board recognised that the men’s claims are worthy of special consideration. The award embodies a revised scale of wages, those for wheelers and surfacemen carrying an • increase of Is to Is 6d a day. Eight shillings a day is fixed as the minimum rate for any class of colliery laborers.
