OBITUARY

ME H. G. C. NEES. An old and respected citizen of Wellington. Mr H. G. Carl Nees, passed away at bis residence. No. 9, Roy street. Newtown, on Tuesday afternoon at 2.30 o’clock. Mr Nees, who was in his eightyninth year, left his native country, Germany," when a young man of- twentynine and came out to Victoria. He established himself in business in Creswick, Ballarat, where he kept a furniture warehouse. In 1864 ho went to Dunedin, and there engaged in business as a builder for some years. Subsequently he carried on sawmills in the West Coast, Taima, Christchurch, and Palmerston North, In 1875 he came to Wellington, and for tho past thirtyseven years has resided here, and until a few years ago ’actively carried. on a large machinery business at the corner of Ghuznco and Marion streets. The-late Mr Nees, who celebrated his diamond wedding tn November, 1916, leaves his widow aged eighty-six, three sons, Mr Albert -Nees, contractor, Cromwell, Otago; Mr Charles Nees, sawmiller, Marlborough; Mr William Nees, hardware merchant, Wellington; and one daughter. Mrs James Scott, of Masterterton. Ho also leaves seventeen' grandchildren and one great-grandson. Deceased up till a fortnigtvf ago, when he had a paralytic stroso, was quite halo and hearty. He passed away very quietly after an exceedingly long and strenuous life. The' funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at 2 o’clock.
