BOROUGH ENGINEERS

BEQUEST FOB SUPERANNUATION. A deputation representing the Institute of Local Government Engineers waited on the Municipal Conference yesterday with a request that a superannuation scheme for engineers in the service of local authorities bo inaugurated. Mr S. Jiokell (borough engineer, Palmerston North) said tho institute they represented was formed for the purpose of mutual help between the local authorities and themselves. It was of great advantage to employers to have qualified man to carry out their work, and his principal object was to request the local bodies to inaugurate as early as possible a superannuation scheme for local government officers. Local bodies had the power to inaugurate such a scheme, and they thought the Act should be made mandatory. He asked that the scheme be put in operation as early as possible; they had had the advice of actuaries, who were satisfied with its justness. Engineers came more in contact with the public than other public servants who enjoyed superannuation. By acceding to their request they would help both engineers and local authorities. Mr H. 8. Eounthwalte also appealed for legislatian enabling the establishment of tho schema Ho asked for mutual sympathy between the engineers and local bodies. The chairman in reply assured the deputation that their representation would have the due and careful consideration of the conference. Mr Bounthwaite remarked that their number was now 86, and they expected a considerable increase. After October next entrance to the profession would be by examination only, so that local bodies could be assured of the assistance of properly qualified men.
