PICTURE SHOWS.

Picture shows and their regulation came In for some discussion at the Municipal Conference yesterday, on a remit from the Wellington council as follows: "That an amendment be made in the Municipal Corporations Act, 19v8, empowering borough councils to make by-laws for the regulation of cinematograph and other picture •hows and exhibitions/' • . This was moved by Mr B. Fletcher, and seconded by the chairman. The latter

said that it was not sought to establish a censorship, but only to make general regulations in the form of by-laws, such as had been done in London and elsewhere. These regulations dealt with class ot builddugs, whether children of tender years should bo allowed to these shows after night, and other m titters. Councillor Fuller thought the words and exhibitions" should be cut out. Bogulaj lions wero a good thing, but ho did not believa in censorship. The picture pro prietors of New Zealand were a very re* epectable class of people. Ho moved to delete the words. The chairman could not allow ibis, now* ever, though it was put to the meeting and defeated. _ _ . Councillor Fletcher was strongly of opinion that the words should bo retained. Ho instanced a recent cose of a certain picture deemed a "work of art," . but the public going into that exhibition had rather mixed feelings. The original remit was passed.
