FIGHTING DISEASE

MEDICAL CONFERENCE TO BE

CALLED,

"In the field of preventive medicine,” said the Hon. B. H. Rhodes, at Greytown yesterday, "a great deal can be done by the appointment of bacteriologists in our main centres. The work of tho bacteriologist goes hand in hand with that of the physician and surgeon, and many a valuable life may be preserved by having within comparatively easy reach the assistance of a bacteriologist. It is hoped that these officers will also be able to prepare those sera and vaccines which now play so important a part in medical and surgical treatment, and which are now imported at great cost to the Dominion." In regard to‘the crusade against consumption, a disease now causing between 600 and 700 , deaths a year in the nonunion, he proposed to call a conference of medical officers whoso time was specially devoted to the treatment of consumption ■in our : various sanatoria. With tho experience they had had in the treatment of the disease, and in consultation with, the medical officers responsible for tho administration of the Public Health, and Hospitals Acts, and with tho assistance of medical inspectors of schools children, it might bo possible, as an outcome of their deliberations and recommendations to put into operation a campaign against consumption which would bring about those results which were the dream of public health authorities the world over.
