POULTRY SHOW

HUTT VALLEY SOCIETY. Tho second annual show under the above auspices was opened at the Lower jiiutt Drill Mail yesterday, under favourable circumstances, tUe weather excepted.. Tne committee and executive omeuiis reepousiute icr the show are to be heartily congratulated upon the completeness of tae general arrangements for tne staging of the birds ana outer details. The entries are again satisfactory, and fairly represent the most prominent breeds both in show and utility poultry. Many of the competitors would claim: distinction in any show. The fact that tho North Island championships for Wyandottes were Being decided at yesterday's show mads strong competition in those classes. Mr J. D. Iremonger, Wellington's most consistent showman, secured a win foi the principal prize with a silver hen, other special winners with Wynadottes being Mrs Johnson (golden), JR. Wanden (white). The pigeon and canary classes show a distinct falling away in number, compared, with last year’s entries, which were exceptionally large; but competent judges wore well pleased with the quality. The opening ceremony was performed by the society's patron (Mr T. M. W Ilford), who congratulated the promoters on their zeal ih bringing the show to so high a standard in so short a time. The speaker stressed the value of exhibitions of this kind, which he looked upon as a sign of progress, and indicated that poullryuien were keeping pace with every other branch of industry by improving their methods in bleeding birds of modern standards. This was especially noticeable in the utility or all purpose classes of poultry. Mr Wilfora referred to the great importance that is placed in poultry production and marketing in countries that he had recently visited, and instanced England and Denmark as examples. So interested had he been in what he had seen abroad that he had collected some information of the prevailing methods, and intimated that he would be pleased to go more fully into details at the social function that is being held this evening in connection with the show- He wished the society a prosperous future, and declared the event open amidst applause.
