About 9 o’clock this morning a stir was caused by the action of a young man, Arthur Somerville, who with pockets loaded with heavy stones jumped from tho Victoria wharf into the harbour. Ho was promptly rescued by a boatman and handed over to the police. An hour later the man appeared before Mr W.iddowson, S.M., at the Police Court to answer a charge of having attempted to commit suicide. When asked whether he desired to be dealt with summarily or before a jury ho said he did not care .where he was tried, though he pleaded guilty. His plea was not accepted. Sub-Inspector Crnickshank explained that tho man, who had been about four years in the Dominion, had come down from Middlemarch about ton days ago and had resided in a boardinghouse since his arrival. Ho was not without money,. there being about A 3 of his at the boardinghouse. . He had explained his conduct by saying he could not sleep, that he had lost his willpower, and that he had lost his religion. It was clear his mind was affected. His Worship said it would bo hotter to remand the case for a week, during which time the man could bo placed under medical observation. Accused was remanded till August Ist.
