ABBOB CELEBRATION,

No fewer than 8357 trees were planted in. city reserves on the Town Belt during the recent Arbor festival. . A return furnished by the superintendent of city reserves (Mr G. .1". Glen) gives'the following statistics of planting :-Koseneath terrace, 310 silver birch- and 388 pittis]X>rum craseifolium ; reserve north of Grass street, 330 silver birch and 182 pittisporum cr-ssifolium; Grass street reserve, 212 silver. birch and 51 pitlisporum; Convalescent -tiorno reserve, 633 silver birch and -700. willows; behind Shannon street, 1111 silver birch;- Jdount Victoria reserve, 2438 silver biich and superintendent of reserves bring down a ver birch . and 615 pittisporum. This gives a total of 5807 silver birch, 1800 pittisporum crassifolium and 750 golden willows. The committee reported at last night's council meeting“ Until such time as the city engineer and Superintendent of Reserves bring down a report (authorised already by. the council) on the future policy of dealing with the Town Belt, and , with a view of the committee keeping the expenses of the reserves within the amount allocated in the estimates for the year, they have decided to discontinue the work of goreo grubbing on the Town Belt. The officers' scheme when approved by the committee will he reported to the council." '
