FEOU OUE own coheespondeut. July 23. A public meeting, convened by th« members of the local Domain Board, was held last night, when there was a good attendance and much enthusiasm shown. The object was to decide on ways and means lor the purchase of trees for planting round the boundary of the sports ground. Mr W. Burns Smith presided. Air Byron Brown (chairman of the Domain Board) said the board had an overdraft of nearly XCO, with no revenue or endowments to wipe off tho deficiency. At tho same time ho was further anxious to have the ground improved, aud moved that a concert bo organised for the purchase of suitable trees. This was unanimously agreed to, and a strong committee was set up tc arrange a programme and fix on a date, both for the concert, and an afternoon, to which the public would be invited to help, for tree-planting. Messrs Brown, Bright, Tahiwi, Stevens, Simeox (members of the board) are to confer with Mrssrs Small, Kilmistor, and Judd relative to suitable trees. It is reported in Manalfau that Mr S. J. Beattie, who was supposed to havo been lost on tho Tararuas, and after whom many parties searched, has been seen by an ex-resident of the district in Sydney. Captain Howard, commander of the Morayshire, has, been on a le ief visit to Otaki. An old ago pensioner named Lyons,who died at Manakau on Saturday, was* buried yesterday. Deceased was wellknown, and for a considerable time was an inmate of the local hospital.
