ENGINE-DRIVERS’ CLAIMS

MASTERS AND MEN COME TO AN AGREEMENT. PHES3 ASSOCIATION.

CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. In the engine-drivers’ dispute the following agreement was arrived at before the Council of Conciliation:—

Forty-eight hours per week; overtime at the rate of time and a quarter: time taken in getting up steam to be paid for at ordinary rates; work done on New Year’s Day, Easter Monday, Labor Day, and the King’s birthday to bo paid for at the rate of time and a halt; work done on Christmas Day, Good Friday, and Sundays to bt paid for at double time rates. In the case of factories, the drivers of engines aro to bo entitled to the

holidays given by any award or industrial agreement affecting the factory, or in cases where there is no award or industrial agreement affecting tho same, to any holiday generally observed in tho factory, whereby the same ceases to work. For work done on such holidays the rate of overtime is to ho time and a hall, morning anil evening newspapers to be exempted from tho holidays clause, preference, and underrate workers’ clauses.

Youths emjdoyed as firemen to ho paid tho following rates; 18 and under ia years ol age, 7-ld per hour; 19 and under' 20 years of a«e, 9J per hour. Where the work that tho engine-driver is employed to do requires that he shah hold a first-class certificate as a stationary engine-driver, and he is the holder of a first-class certificate, Is 3;jd per hour. Regarding other classes of en-gine-drivers, the employers’ assessors stated they were not prepared to agree to any advance on the present awhrd rates, and after considerable disci ssion the union’s assessors agreed.
