RUST-RESISTING OATS

The good work that has been inaugurated at the Ruakura Farm of Instruction in the direction of improving the yield and blight-resisting qualities of cereals by means of selection was well illustrated by an exhibit at the recent winter shows. Fjjur years ago a single head of what was claimed to be a rustresisting oat was sown and harvested. Further sowings were continued annually from the product ox the original head. The net result to date is seven sheaves of healthy oats together with 161 bushels of seed. These oats have been quite free from the effect of rust all along the line of experiment. This object lesson is only one of many valuable hints which are given to farmers per the medium of agricultural shows. An experiment such as the on© described is within the reach of every farmer, and offers one of the best means of improving present seed stocks. By conducting private local tests there would be the additional advantage of having the seed grown in the environment where the main crop is to follow.
