FRIDAY, JULY 19. & (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) AN ANIMATED DISCUSSION. May Gibbons was charged with assaulting Mary Bond on June 28th. Sub-Inspector Sheehan stated that accused had during an altercation struck complainant across the nose with a poker. Mr A. H. Hindmarsh, accused s counsel, said the trouble arose in an "animated discussion” in North street. Drink was in great measure the cause of accused acting in the way she did. She did not hit bond with a poker, but with # her hand. It appeared that the complainant was removed to the •: hospital suffering not only from the effects of the blow, but from drink as well. _ As accused had been in gaol for a fortnight, she was only ordered to come up for sentence when called on, and a prohibition order was issued against her. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. John Williamson pleaded guilty to having attempted to commit suicide at Otaki on July 11th. •/ Sub-Inspector Sheehan said accused had been a porter at the Otaki Hospital and had taken strychnine after partaking too freely of liquor. Mr E. C. Kirk, who appeared for accused, stated that the man was industrious. Drink was his sole trouble. Accused, against whom a prohibition order was issued, was ordered to ooihe up for sentence when called upon, on condition that ho paid £1 Is’expenses. , THEFT CHARGES. George Albert Wallingford, eighteen years of age, appeared on three cnarges of theft. - It was stated that accused had only been in the Dominion twelve months, having come from Sydney. He was fined 40b, in default seven days for stealing a silver pencil case, a pocket-book, and three handkerchiefs, the. property of Robert Law, from tbe Palace Hotel, Wellington. On two other informations of stealing a gold watch, a gold chain, and two gold pendants, valued at XlO 15s, belonging to E. J. Turrell, from the Albion Hotel, Wanganui, and of thieving .£6O-worth of jewellery from Nixon’s Hotel, Wanganui, he was remanded to appear at Wanganui. John Albert Corbett was remanded until July 24th on a charge of breaking and entering the premises of F. Cooper, Ltd., Willis street, and stealing 7d. Bail was allowed in the , sum of JEIOO, two sureties of J 250 or one of .£IOO. Accused' was caught by Constable Smart in Cooper’s shop on Thursday night. DEALT WITH LIGHTLY. William Edward Thompson was ordered to come up for sentence when called on, on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond, having been found by night upon premises in May street. DRUNKENNESS. William Haines Barrow, for helpless drunkenness, was ordered to pay costs, 13s 6d. , , John Smith was fined 10s for drunkenness, and for damaging a cell utensil he was also fined 10s. Carrie Corbett was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and for a breach of a prohibition order was fined £l, in default seven days. MAINTENANCE. For the disobedience of a maintenance order, William Arthur Andrews was
fined £2, in default seven days. The amount payable under the order was reduced to Ss per week during the winter months, but the arrears were not remitted. WASTING WATER. Margaret Isabel Bolton was fined ss, with costs 7s, for allowing water to be wasted by escaping -from a defective waterpipe at 131, Tory street.
